Sleep Disturbance !

Lack of Sleep Increases Harmful Abdominal Fat

A randomized controlled crossover study conducted at the Mayo Clinic found that insufficient sleep significantly increases unhealthy abdominal fat accumulation. Compared to participants who had normal sleep, those with restricted sleep experienced a 9% increase in total abdominal fat area and an 11% increase in visceral abdominal fat. Visceral fat, which accumulates deep inside the abdomen around internal organs, is strongly associated with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Insufficient sleep has become increasingly common due to shift work, prolonged use of smartphones and social media during nighttime, and modern lifestyle habits. More than one-third of adults in the United States do not get adequate sleep on a regular basis. In addition, people tend to consume more calories during extended waking hours without increasing physical activity.Researchers explained that fat is usually stored under the skin (subcutaneous fat). However, inadequate sleep appears to redirect fat storage toward the more dangerous visceral compartment. Importantly, even after recovery sleep, although calorie intake and body weight decreased, visceral fat continued to increase. This finding suggests that “catch-up sleep” may not immediately reverse the harmful effects of sleep deprivation on visceral fat accumulation.In the long term, inadequate sleep may contribute significantly to the growing epidemics of obesity, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disorders.

Antidiabetic & Dementia !

Certain Diabetes Drugs May Reduce Dementia Risk

Recent research suggests that an older class of type 2 diabetes medications known as thiazolidinediones (TZDs) may help lower the risk of dementia. Although the exact mechanism remains unclear, researchers believe improved glucose metabolism may play an important role in protecting cognitive function. Diabetes is a well-established risk factor for dementia. Since glucose is the brain’s primary energy source for functions such as thinking, understanding, and problem-solving, impaired glucose regulation may negatively affect cognition. In this study, researchers analyzed older veterans with type 2 diabetes treated within the U.S. Veterans Affairs Healthcare System between 2000 and 2019. Participants aged 60 years and above who received metformin, sulfonylureas, or thiazolidinediones were followed for approximately eight years. The study found that patients taking thiazolidinediones had: An 11% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease & A 57% lower risk of vascular dementia
In contrast, patients treated with sulfonylureas alone showed a 12% higher risk of developing dementia from any cause. Researchers noted that thiazolidinediones appeared to be the most effective among the studied drugs in reducing the long-term risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Maintaining healthy glucose metabolism early in the course of diabetes may provide long-lasting cognitive benefits. Experts also emphasized the importance of lifestyle modification, including healthy eating habits and regular physical activity. However, specialists cautioned that it is still too early to recommend antidiabetic drugs solely for dementia prevention in people without diabetes. Further clinical studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Fish Oil & Aging Brain !

Fish Oil May Help Protect the Aging Brain

Fish has long been considered “brain food,” and a recent study suggests that this belief may be especially true for middle-aged adults. Researchers found that individuals with higher blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids performed better on tests measuring memory and thinking abilities. They also showed greater thickness in brain regions associated with memory, areas that typically shrink with aging and dementia. Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA and EPA, are commonly found in fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, and sardines. These nutrients are also available through fish oil supplements. The study focused on more than 2,000 mentally healthy middle-aged adults, with an average age of 46 years. Researchers aimed to determine whether omega-3 fatty acids could influence brain structure and cognitive function during middle age, a period when the earliest signs of abnormal brain aging may begin to develop. Participants underwent MRI brain scans and standard assessments of memory and cognitive performance. Their blood levels of DHA and EPA were also measured. Researchers adjusted the analysis for several influencing factors, including age, body weight, smoking habits, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Even after accounting for these variables, higher omega-3 levels remained associated with better brain structure and cognitive performance. Although the study does not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship, previous research has also linked omega-3 fatty acids with improved brain health. Experimental studies suggest that omega-3s may reduce inflammation, protect brain cells in the hippocampus, and support the formation of new nerve cells. Importantly, researchers noted that moderate omega-3 intake may be sufficient to provide brain benefits, indicating that even regular dietary consumption of fish could help support healthy brain aging.

Heart Failure Risk  !

                     Fatty Liver Disease May Increase Heart Failure Risk

An abnormal buildup of fat in the liver not caused by alcohol may greatly increase the risk of heart failure, according to new research. Nearly 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. has a condition known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD. Scientists already knew NAFLD can lead to permanent liver damage and increase the risk for atherosclerosis, when plaque builds up in the arteries. But there has been less research on NAFLD's relationship with heart failure, a term used when the heart isn't pumping as well as it should be. About 6 million U.S. adults have heart failure, which can't be cured but can be treated with lifestyle changes, medications and surgical procedures. Researchers looked at national health survey data from 2005-2018 and found more than 3.8 million adults with NAFLD, including about 400,000 who also had heart failure. People with NAFLD who were older, male or who had diabetes or coronary heart disease were at particularly higher risk for heart failure. But even after adjusting for age, race and gender, the researchers found adults with NAFLD were 3.5 times more likely to have heart failure than those without NAFLD. Doctors need to keep a close eye on cardiac function as well as liver biomarkers and make sure patients with heart failure are not developing fatty liver disease and vice versa, the researcher said. He said obesity, diabetes and high cholesterol often play a major role in NAFLD. He recommended using the AHA's Life's Essential 8 checklist for improving and maintaining cardiovascular health. The list calls for keeping a healthy weight, not smoking, being physically active, eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep and controlling blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.

Migraines During Menstruation !

  Low Estrogen Levels Paired with Higher CGRP Levels

Researcher said that the elevated level of CGRP (calcitonin gene-related peptide) following hormonal fluctuations could help to explain why migraine attacks are more likely during menstruation and why migraine attacks gradually decline after menopause. The study involved three groups of female participants with episodic migraine. All had at least three days with migraine in the month before the study. The groups were those with a regular menstrual cycle, those taking oral contraceptives, and those who had gone through menopause. Each group was compared to a group of female participants of similar ages who did not have migraine. Each group had 30 people, for a total of 180. Researchers collected blood and tear fluid to determine CGRP levels. In those with regular menstrual cycles, the samples were taken during menstruation when estrogen levels are low and around the time of ovulation, when levels are the highest. In those taking oral contraceptives, samples were taken during the hormone-free time and the hormone-intake time. Samples were taken once from postmenopausal participants at a random time. The study found that female participants with migraine and a regular menstrual cycle had higher CGRP concentrations during menstruation than those without migraine. Those with migraine had blood levels of 5.95 picograms per milliliter (pg/ml) compared to 4.61 pg/ml for those without migraine. For tear fluid, those with migraine had 1.20 nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml) compared to 0.4 ng/ml for those without migraine. The study also suggests that measuring CGRP levels through tear fluid is feasible and warrants further investigation. Researcher said that this method is still exploratory, but it is non-invasive and also noted that while hormone levels were taken around the time of ovulation, they may not have been taken exactly on the day of ovulation, so the fluctuations in estrogen levels may not be fully reflected.

Anxiety Biomarker !

             Researchers Develop Blood Test for Anxiety

Many people are suffering from anxiety, which can be very disabling and interfere with daily life. The current approach is to talk to people about how they feel to see if they could be on medications, but some medications can be addictive and create more problems. Researcher wanted to see if approach to identify blood biomarkers could help the match people to existing medications that will work better and could be a non-addictive choice. Researcher has led to the development of blood tests for pain, depression/bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. The study included three independent cohorts - discovery, validation and testing. Participants would complete a blood test every 3-6 months or whenever a new psychiatric hospitalization occurred. By examining the RNA biomarkers in the blood, researchers could identify a patient's current state of anxiety and matches them with medications and nutraceuticals, showing how effective different options could be for them based on their biology. In addition to medications, there are other methods to treat anxiety, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or lifestyle changes. But having something objective like this where we can know what someone's current state is as well as their future risk and what treatment options match their profile is very powerful in helping people. A person's biomarkers can also change over time. Researcher said the test can help evaluate a person's risk of developing higher levels of anxiety in the future as well as how other factors might impact their anxiety. Researchers said this new test could also be used in combination with the other blood tests his research has led to, providing a more comprehensive view of a patient's mental health and risk of future mental health concerns. Researchers can also use the test to develop new treatments for anxiety that are more targeted to individual biomarkers.
